China in Revolution","The Mao Years",和"Born Under the Red Flag",合称 "China Trilogy",在Amazon.com的片名叫"China: A Century of Revolution",制作者耗资一百多万美元,制作中花费百分之六七十的时间在与中国政府及其地方官员的周旋与获得采访允许上,从新闻报道、选裁,到制作、配乐等,都独具匠心。

红色不仅象征中国曾经走过的共产主义理想与道路,也彰显着如今面临过去历程所带来的后果而引发的一系列从经济到文化的赤字。

字幕暂时没有,不过都是些很简单的慢速英语,有一定基础的朋友都可以听懂!

CHINA TRILOGY

In 1986 Ambrica Productions began the CHINA Trilogy, a series of three feature-length documentaries that explore the history of modern China. Much of the twentieth century in China has been dominated by a single generation of men and women and their commitment to communism. This group formed the Chinese Communist Party in the 1920’s, came to power in the 1940’s and transformed the country into a world power in the 1980’s. Now the last leaders of this generation are passing away, bringing to an end one of the most dramatic periods of Chinese history. Their stories and the stories of the ordinary people of China – peasants and workers, intellectuals and soldiers, families in villages and cities – form the heart of the CHINA Trilogy.

The first film, CHINA IN REVOLUTION describes the epic upheaval that began in China with the fall of the last emperor in 1911. Over the next four decades, the Chinese people were caught up in struggles with warlords, foreign invasion and a bitter rivalry between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party. The film highlights the two figures who came to shape events, Chang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong. First they worked as allies to unite the country and then they fought a bloody civil war that was won by the Communists in 1949.

Ambrica continue the trilogy with THE MAO YEARS, a look at the next period of modern China’s history: Mao Zedong’s rule, from 1949 to his death in 1976. The film begins with the celebrations marking the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, a moment of great hope for millions of Chinese. But the quarter-century of Mao’s rule was as turbulent as the decades which preceded it. Interludes of relative calm and increased prosperity were interrupted repeatedly by violent campaigns, purges, and a famine in which killed more than 30 million people. It culminated in Mao’s colossal and tragic experiment, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. When Mao died in 1976, people were exhausted by the turmoil and longed for stability.

What happened next could never have been anticipated and forms the story line for the final film of the trilogy; BORN UNDER THE RED FLAG examines China’s remarkable transformation after Mao’s death. In just 15 years, under Deng Xiaoping’s leadership, China raced forward at an astonishing pace to become a never-before-seen hybrid of communism and capitalism. The world’s most populous nation has reinvented itself, changing from a relatively undeveloped and isolated nation into an economic giant and a major player on the world stage. For many Chinese, this transformation has brought unprecedented prosperity, but it has also raised troubling questions of national identity and social inequality.

The trilogy ends as the first generation of Communist revolutionaries is passing from the scene and as the Chinese struggle to reconcile the achievements and failures of the past with an uncertain future.

CHINA IN REVOLUTION 1911-1949 explores the turbulent years prior to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. This ground breaking television documentary is the first to examine this complex historical era through interviews with people who experienced it. In the course of the program, viewers watch and listen as Chinese citizens recall their dramatic pasts. The film, which combines rare archival footage with location segments filmed in China and Taiwan, was first broadcast on PBS just after the Tiananmen Square tragedy of 1989. CHINA IN REVOLUTION begins Ambrica Production's epic series on the history of 20th century China.

PRESS REVIEWS

"The film provides exactly the sort of long-range socio-political context that Western news organizations seldom bring to breaking events. Moreover, it does so with a visual integrity that is simply stunning... If this film serves no other purpose, it reminds us that the Tiananmen Square rebellion has a much longer history -- and a far deeper context -- than a few days in June 1989. No one 'lost'China, but this film helps re-find her." The Boston Globe

"What is remarkable about this documentary film is not only that it contains rare footage chronicling those turbulent years, but also that the archival footage is enlivened by the film-makers' interviews with people - both on the mainland and on Taiwan - who either witnessed the happenings shown on the screen or were themselves participants in the historic events that changed China for better or for worse. The recounting of their personal experiences brings history closer to the audience and provides authentic details in a breathtaking panorama." The Asian Wall Street Journal

THE MAO YEARS 1949-1976

This two-hour documentary continues the CHINA Trilogy. It looks at China during the tumultuous quarter-century of Mao Zedong’s rule, 1949 to 1976. Combining rare archival footage with remarkable first hand interviews, THE MAO YEARS opens a window on a nation that, for much of the period, seemed closed and incomprehensible. Included are never-before-seen images of Mao, Deng Xiaoping, and other leaders working and relaxing; cataclysmic events like the Great Leap Forward and the terrible famine it produced; the chaos of the Cultural Revolution; the historic visit of President Nixon; and personal stories of hope and pride, terror and repression.

PRESS REVIEWS

"It's what a documentary should be: rigorous, eye-opening and educational in the best sense of the word...Through the use of archival footage and superb interviews with witnesses writer/producer/director Sue Williams has somehow managed to avoid every possible pitfall" New York Post

"Remarkable...a chronicle of achievement, misadventure, cruelty, and havoc." New York Times

"Sue Williams, the writer/producer/director of 1989's award winning CHINA IN REVOLUTION 1911-1949, returns with an equally engrossing and much more appalling sequel, THE MAO YEARS 1949-1976." New York Magazine

BORN UNDER THE RED FLAG 1976-1997

“It doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.”

Deng Xiaoping

BORN UNDER THE RED FLAG completes Ambrica's CHINA Trilogy and tells the story of China’s remarkable transformation after Mao Zedong’s death in 1976. The filmmakers combine never-before-seen archival footage from China with location shooting and interviews with a wide range of China’s people: peasants, political prisoners, intellectuals, students, and government officials. Their personal stories are compelling and often tragic, and reveal how the Chinese have struggled to cope with failed ideals, a brutal, outmoded communism, and a harsh new capitalism. BORN UNDER THE RED FLAG ends China's epic journey to the dawn of the 21st century and its pursuit of seemingly contradictory goals: economic strength and prosperity, and absolute Communist. Reinvigorated by the dynamic spirit of its people, the largest nation on earth has finally become a world economic and military power.

PRESS REVIEWS

"You don't need expertise in Chinese history to appreciate the craft of 'Born Under the Red Flag.' With its unwavering journalistic depth and narrative drive, the documentary should wow anyone with an interest in contemporary cultures -- or fine television." San Francisco Examiner

"CHINA: BORN UNDER THE RED FLAG concludes the ambitious three-part PBS history that began with CHINA IN REVOLUTION and continued with THE MAO YEARS. . . This vivid history of 20 tumultuous years is at once an appreciation of the society's strides toward a better life for many of its people and a condemnation of the unyielding grip of the Communist Party bosses." New York Times

"This film's depiction of the events leading to the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre is painstaking and ever-thoughtful . . . As the ferment grows throughout late '80s demonstrations, BORN marches assertively toward its tragic denouement without a pious note." Philadelphia Inquirer
